Kwetsende cijfers

Demissionair minister Verhagen heeft onze ambassadeur bij de H. Stoel officieel laten protesteren tegen een uitspraak van Staatssecretaris Bertone. Deze antwoordde, op de vraag van een journalist of er een verband bestaat tussen celibaat en sexueel misbruik door geestelijken, het volgende:

Veel psychologen en psychiaters hebben aangetoond dat er geen verband is tussen celibaat en sexueel misbruik, maar vele anderen hebben aangetoond, en hebben mij recentelijk verteld, dat er een verband bestaat tussen homosexualiteit en pedofilie.

Het Nederlandse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken:

De uitlatingen van kardinaal Tarcision Bertone dat er een verband zou zijn tussen kindermisbruik en homoseksualiteit, zijn ongefundeerd en kwetsend.

We gaan even voorbij aan het feit dat Bertone het heeft over pedofilie (dat is tegennatuurlijk "vallen op kinderen", net als homofilie "vallen op mensen van hetzelfde geslacht" is), terwijl kindermisbruik, net als homosexuele handelingen, misschien wel pedofilie resp. homofilie veronderstellen, maar er, dankzij de menselijke vrijheid, geen noodzakelijk gevolg van zijn.

Het zien van een verband tussen homosexualiteit en pedofilie is ongefundeerd als het geen fundament heeft. Dat is niet zo. Er zijn precieze cijfers, zie het interview hieronder met de socioloog prof. Massimo Introvigne.
Dat cijfers geïnterpreteerd moeten worden is een tweede. Wat voor verband dat precies is, hoeft nog niet duidelijk te zijn.
Maar dit soort cijfers zijn wel heel belangrijk bijvoorbeeld als we iets willen begrijpen over kindermisbruik om er iets tegen te kunnen doen.

Daarom moet niet te snel geschermd worden met het het begrip "kwetsend". Veel waars is pijnlijk. Het is ook heel pijnlijk dat er priesters zijn die niet van minderjarigen af hebben kunnen blijven. We zien duidelijk, ook in de Kerk, hoe het "niet willen kwetsen", als hoofdcriterium (in plaats van allereerst te willen begrijpen en indien nodig (en dat is vaak nodig) te zeggen hoe de dingen ervoor staan, en vervolgens de misstanden aan te willen pakken) meer kwaad dan goed doet.

Uit het interview van prof. Introvigne met Zenit:

I believe it is a duty to express solidarity with Cardinal Bertone, who is a victim of an unworthy and, frankly, ill-mannered aggression. In the framework of a press conference, which is not a scientific exposition, the cardinal limited himself to alluding to an obvious fact that all the experts know. According to the 2004 report from John Jay College of New York - the most authoritative study that exists on the subject - in the United States 81% of minors' accusations of abuses by priests affect boys and not girls. We are speaking of males who abuse other males. In Ireland also the abuses of priests against boys are double compared to those of girls.
These are numbers and, as such, they shouldn't offend anyone and one cannot make them say more - or less - than what they say.

But one cannot say that homosexuals are pedophiles...

No one has said that. No one has said that all priests with homosexual tendencies abuse minors. That would be an absolutely unjust accusation. However, it is a fact that the majority of priests who abuse minors, abuse minors of the same sex.

Cardinal Bertone certainly did not wish to make a medical assessment of this behavior: ephebophilia, homosexuality, pedophilia. Those who criticize him confuse a press conference with a medical treatise, and seek to prohibit the mention of statistical data they consider politically incorrect. This is an unacceptable form of censure, on occasions disguised as scientific.

In his pastoral letter to Ireland's Catholics, Benedict XVI notes a clear relation between these cases of loss of respect for the Church and her teachings, which has developed within her after Vatican Council II. Do you see a direct relation?

In my personal opinion I believe that a certain tolerance in some Catholic seminaries - let it be clear, not in all - a homosexual subculture of the 70s, has had more than a secondary role in the moral confusion and in the theoretical and practical answer of the moral magisterium of the Church, which the Pope criticizes in his letter on Ireland. This doctrinal and practical confusion prepared the ground in which at times the evil weed of tolerance was able to grow regarding the abuses. It certainly has not been the only cause of the crisis, but it is part of a more general problem. The Church has taken measures precisely to address this problem.

De Russische media weten vandaag te melden dat de Parlementaire Assemblee van de Raad van Europa (waarvan het Hof de Italiaanse kruisbeelden verbood), in haar strijd tegen de discriminatie van "sexuele minderheden", deze maand een voorstel bespreekt om in alle Europese landen op de scholen een "vak over de bijzonderheden van homosexueel gedrag" in te voeren.
